BMW Group Develops Software for Humanoid Robotics in Component Production

The BMW Group is expanding into humanoid robotics, with its plant in Landshut, Germany, taking on central software development tasks for AI-supported robotics in component production. The focus of this new initiative will be on open software platforms, simulation, motion planning, and the training of robotic systems. These activities will complement similar projects that are already underway at Plants Leipzig and Spartanburg.

The wide range of products and manufacturing processes at Plant Landshut provides ideal conditions for developing and evaluating AI-supported robotics under real-world conditions. The plan is to learn which production tasks are best suited to humanoid robotic systems, particularly in terms of fine motor skills and an understanding of the working environment. To this end, Plant Landshut is developing software that allows robots to better perceive their environment and take appropriate actions independently. The BMW Group is working closely with partners from industry and academia at Plant Landshut. This includes direct cooperation with Athenyx Robotics, a startup founded specifically for this field of robotics, as well as with specialists from the University of Applied Sciences Landshut.

If all goes well with this research and development initiative, the plan for the BMW Group is to develop a modular robotics ecosystem in which various systems work together to handle much of the component production at BMW's manufacturing plants. While we may still be a few years away from a BMW built entirely by humanoid robots, we still have an excellent selection of vehicles available at our dealership.
