What's New for the 2018 BMW 4 Series?

BMW cars excel because of their superior craftsmanship, high material quality, innovative tech, practicality, high performance, and utilitarianism - and the 4 Series is no different. Four years after it replaced the 3 Series, the world is yet to find fault with the 4 Series. It is as powerful, stylishly designed, and safe to drive as any midsize car can get. The 4 Series offers a refined ride, ample legroom and headroom, a wide variety of standard safety, comfort, and tech features, and a quiet cabin. Intended to be among the most practical and utilitarian offerings on the market, all models of the 4 Series feature a plethora of convenience equipment and an intuitive dashboard that requires very little time - and effort - to become second nature. The 4 Series reigns in a category populated by ambitious Mercedes-Benz and Audi offerings.

The BMW 4 Series received new trim terminology and a new set of engines for the 2017-model year, and nobody expected changes anytime soon. Nonetheless, BMW still introduces a few minor tweaks and upgrades for the new year. BMW stiffens the suspension for better handling, tweaks the steering wheel, and adds new exterior colors: Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange. The front and rear fascias are also subtly freshened and now include new headlights and taillights. Other changes include unique wheel designs, a new interface for the optional navigation system and a more robust available advanced instrument-cluster display.

2018 BMW 4 Series comes in three body styles: the coupe, the convertible, and the Gran Coupe. Within these models, drivers can choose either the 430i or 440i trim. The 430i stocks 18-inch wheels, a sunroof (coupe), auto-dimming mirrors, LED fog lights, a rearview camera, automatic LED headlights, selectable drive modes, BMW's emergency telematics, automatic wipers, cruise control, electronically heated mirrors and smartphone app control.

On the inside, it provides simulated leather upholstery, multi-zone automatic climate control, a garage door unlocking system, 10-way power-adjustable front sports seats and BMW's iDrive infotainment system. The cabin also gets Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, a 6.5-inch display, and a nine-speaker sound system with USB input, HD radio and a CD player. The 440i adds a few extras including a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio and keyless entry and ignition. There are myriads of optional features highlighted by adaptive headlights, sporty exterior touches, an automatic parking system, automatic high beams and a navigation system. Adaptive or M-Sport-oriented suspension, heated front seats, a head-up display, a power rear sunshade, premium leather upholstery, Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree camera system and a wireless charger are also available.

2018 BMW 4 Series SideA turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder mill generating 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque powers the 430i. The 440i employs a more potent turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder that manufactures 326 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Both engines use an eight-speed auto-transmission to drive the rear wheels. A six-speed manual is available for coupe models while BMW's xDrive AWD system is an option to all.

2018 BMW 4 Series Safety, A Top Priority

2018 BMW 4 Series RearThe 2018 BMW 4 Series is one of the safest vehicles on the road. It offers a comprehensive list of driver assistance safety features including a blind-spot warning, lane departure warning, city collision mitigation, frontal collision warning, pedestrian warning, and cruise control with a stop-and-go function. Additionally, the 4 Series has a system that automatically unlocks all doors, turns on hazard lights, and disconnects the fuel pump, alternator, and starter from the battery after an accident.
