Even though the auto industry is gravitating more and more towards plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles, it can be difficult to find places to charge these cars. As part of the Express Charging Corridors Initiative, BMW teamed up with Volkswagen and ChargePoint to install nearly 100 public charging stations along major coastal highways.
If you are planning a trip on the West Coast, you can find charging stations located on Interstate 5 and Highway 1 from Portland to San Diego. On the East Coast, new stations have popped up all along Interstate 95 from Boston to Washington, DC.. The stations can be found ever fifty miles and are conveniently located near restaurants, rest stops and shopping centers. The charging connectors not only support BMW vehicles like the BMW I3, but will also work for select hybrids from other automakers.

“BMW’s vision for an innovative, more convenient future of electric mobility encompasses the continued rollout of a robust public infrastructure throughout the U.S. to benefit our customers and all EV drivers,” noted Robert Healey, Head of EV Infrastructure for BMW of North America. “The partnership with VW and ChargePoint demonstrates the efficiencies of industry cooperation for building robust public DC Fast charging while encouraging consumer interest in electric vehicles such as the BMW i3.”
While this initiative has not yet spread to Lincoln, the fact that BMW is actively working to expand access to EV charging stations is a good sign that we may soon see a surge of them here! Best of all, the stations implemented by BMW are faster than most—vehicles can reach an 80 percent charge in about twenty minutes.
