M-Series Interior

BMW of Lincoln knows that odd smells in your car can be uncomfortable. What many car owners don't realize is that some car odors can indicate problems with an automobile. Here are a few common smells you may encounter and what those smells could mean.

Sulfur or Rotten Eggs

This smell can mean that the catalytic converter on a car is not working properly. The smell is created by hydrogen sulfide, and it comes when trace amounts of sulfur are left behind in gasoline. It would be best if you had your car checked to make sure all parts of the fuel system are functioning properly.

Gym Clothes

Mildew and mold are the likely culprits when your car begins to smell like your workout clothes after a good gym session. Mildew can build up in the vents of your car's air conditioning system. Running the fan might be enough to help dry out the air conditioning system, but you will need to have the car serviced by professionals in many cases.

Burned Rubber

There are a few reasons that you might encounter the smell of burned rubber when driving. The most common are worn belts or leaking oil. Either of these can cause serious concern, and you should have your car examined by a trained mechanic as soon as possible.

Burned Carpet

When brake pads overheat, they can produce an odor that smells like burned carpet. This small can also be a sign that your brake pads will soon need replacement. Our service center can inspect and service your brakes, and we can also make repairs if necessary.

We want to invite you down to BMW of Lincoln, where our service professionals can examine your car to determine the source of these smells. Don't delay a service appointment when you encounter odd smells in your car.
