Data released in February by the U.S. Department of Commerce has confirmed that BMW Manufacturing was the leading automotive exporter by value in the United States in 2024. Plant Spartanburg in Spartanburg, NC, exported nearly 225,000 BMW Sports Activity Vehicles and Coupes with a combined export value of more than $10 billion. Plant Spartanburg has also exported more than 2.7 million BMWs since 2014, which is roughly 63 percent of its total production. These vehicles have a total export value of more than $104 billion.
Plant Spartanburg has been an important location within the BMW production network since it first opened in 1994. It is currently the largest BMW Group plant in the world. BMW opened its first press shop in North America at Plant Spartanburg in 2024, and the plant itself continued its X3/X4 assembly hall to prepare to assemble fully electric vehicles. The plant is scheduled to ship its first electric vehicles in 2026. By 2030, the BMW Group will assemble at least six fully electric models in the United States.
The BMW Group has invested more than $14.8 billion in its operations in South Carolina since 1992. More than 1,500 BMW vehicles are assembled in South Carolina every day, and nearly 57 percent of those vehicles are shipped to approximately 120 global markets. This has made BMW the largest automotive exporter by value in the United States for more than a decade. Nearly half of all BMW vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2024 came from Plant Spartanburg, which employs more than 11,000 workers.
