How Often Should You Replace Your Windshield Wipers?
Windshield wipers should be replaced every six to 12 months, but since that's such a big window of time, it's best to keep an eye on your wipers and replace them when necessary. The lifespan of windshield wipers is affected by numerous factors, such as how often they are used, where your vehicle is kept, and if you've had to contend with severe weather. Windshield wipers can undoubtedly last a whole year, but it's far more likely that you'll need to replace them sooner than that.
Signs that You Need New Windshield Wipers
The best way to know when to replace your windshield wipers is to look for certain signs. The first and most obvious is the state of the rubber wiper blades. These blades act as squeegees that wipe away water, snow, and any debris that gets onto your windshield. They can also crack or wear away fairly quickly. They should be checked at least once a month for signs of wear and tear. If the rubber is rough to the touch, the blades should be replaced.
You might also need new wiper blades if your wipers squeak or squeal when they're used. Not only does this sound horrible, but it's a sign that your wipers are starting to wear out. You might be able to get some use out of them if you can tune out the noise, but they're probably on their last legs.
Older windshield wipers may also need to be replaced if you notice streaks in your windshield. Ideally, your visibility should be nearly perfect when you use your windshield wipers. If you notice streaks making it difficult for you to drive, it's time for some new wipers.
Finally, keep a close eye on the metal part of the windshield wipers since it tends to rust. This won't harm your visibility, but the wipers themselves could break when they get to this point.
